More than just a little "patent"
Utility model protection in Germany
Like a patent, a utility model is a technical property right. One advantage of a utility model is that it is usually registered within a few weeks of the filing date. This gives the applicant a quickly enforceable right and thus a basis for advertising, distribution, and prohibition. Furthermore, a utility model has a six-month grace period. This means that the presentation of an invention, for example, at a trade fair, does not prevent registration, provided this "pre-publication" occurred no more than six months ago. There are further exceptions that would be detrimental to a patent but are irrelevant for a utility model. Thus, a utility model can be a very powerful property right.
Protection abroad
Like a German patent, a German utility model can also be converted into protective rights in other countries. The same requirements apply to subsequent applications abroad as for patents.
