Maria Cláudia Souza studied pharmacy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFF), where she also earned her master's degree in chemistry. As a visiting student at the University of Hamburg, she further developed her master's research, focusing on the synthesis of organic compounds, particularly nucleotide analogues.
Ms. Souza has over 13 years of experience as a patent attorney at the renowned local IP law firm Kaznar Leonardos Intellectual Property in her native Brazil. She focused particularly on the life sciences industry. Her work focused on patent applications and their substantive drafting, client consulting in the areas of pharmacology, chemistry, biotechnology, food, and medical devices, and conducting substantive analyses, such as freedom-to-operate (FTO) opinions, expert opinions on patent infringement and validity, prior art searches, and patent family searches.
Professional representative before the European Patent Office
In 2025, Ms. Souza successfully passed the patent attorney examinations before the European Patent Office and now works as a European patent attorney in our firm. She advises our clients on all matters of intellectual property law, with a particular focus on pharmaceuticals and chemistry, preferably in English or Portuguese.
